Help! My Mali Uro doesn't appear to be eating!

Chickadee0104 Aug 04, 2003 11:06 PM

Two weeks ago I purchased my second Mali Uro. He was big and fat when I bought him, and seemed to be in good health. Since I brought him home, I haven't really seen him eat. The one exception was when he snapped up a single mealworm. Because he is housed with my female Uro, I don't know if any of the missing food has been eaten by him. My female eats like a pig; as soon as I put in the dish of carrots, squash, collards, and dandelions she goes for it. Is it possible that my male IS eating, just not when I am around? He doesn't seem to have lost much weight, though he does look a little slimmer. At the reptile store where I bought him he was being fed on collard greens and turtle food. I haven't given him any turtle food because when I read the ingredients it seemed inappropriate for a Uro. Should I try trutle food? How can I get him to eat? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

usually when uros are starting to get acclimated they dont eat for weeks, but all uros are different. When i got my 1.1 malis my male ate on the first day, and my female starting eating on the third week. As long as you give your malis that is not eating some baths to hydrate him he should be fine and should start eating. I think he would be fine for another week without eating. If he doesn't eat in a week try taking him to the vet and see if he has any health issues.

Mike and Tara:

Thank you so much for responding to my post. I was getting really nervous about my Uro, but your information took away a lot of that stress. I bought some mealworms today, and both of my Uro's ate a ton of them. I guess the male will eat greens and veggies once he gets acclimated. If not, I will take him into the vet. Thanks again, and I will let you guys know how he does!

I would try using Red vegitables and fruits. I read somewhere that mail uromastyx are attracted to the color red and I had the same problem with my female when I brought her home but now she eats like crazy! hope it helps!

lots and lots and lots of patience. My mali took 3 weeks until he would eat. Just keep changing the variety until something catches his eye. The vet trip could stress your mali out even more, and cause it not too eat, so I would wait a little bit longer.
