Grayband/Knob Feeding Issues

stnick80 Sep 04, 2006 02:23 PM

I purchaed 1.1 Graybands and 1.1 Knoblochi while at the Daytona reptile show. The graybands were purchased from Lee Abbott and I can't recall whom the Knoblochi came from. Lee said the graybands were feeding on pinks, the knoblochi however, were new hatchlings and had never fed. I've tried live pinks, F/T pinks, and split-brain pinks with no success. I have read that scenting a pink with a fence lizard or side-blotched lizard will often get these guys started. I don't think I have access to these at this time because I live in georgia. I have seen Anoles aplenty but I heard that they don't work well. Does anybody know where I can purchase some lizards to freeze and use for scenting purposes? Or does anyone else have some additional advice? I would like to get these guys feeding. Thank you.

Here are a couple of pictures.

Both the GBKs and the Knobs look like they're a little big for non-feeding hatchlings. I'm sure if they were eating before you bought them, which is highly likely due to their size, they will eat again. I'd keep trying with live pinkies. Try to disturb them as little as possible. Newborns usually will not eat if they feel insecure our if they're basic husbandry needs are not being met i.e., temprature and shelter. Patience is the key, they might need more time to settle down, I'm sure they were moved around a lot before and after the Daytona show.
Good luck,

Allegedly (not from my experience) sometimes subspecies of pyromelana don't eat until after their first brumation.

Skinks also apparently sometimes work for scenting. Any skinks in your neck of the woods?

If it were legal, I'd send you a fence lizard - they breed in my yard. But export of them, especially WC, is forbidden.

I did some research and found that we do have fence lizards and various skinks here in Georgia. I went outside and did some looking but all I found was 2 Anoles. I didn't keep them because I've heard they dont work well.

I tried F/T split brain pinks today and one of them bit but then he dropped it as they often do and showed no further interest. Hopefully patience will be all it takes. These young guys sure can make you nervous sometimes.

My now 2 year old greyband refused pinks for a couple of months. Then he started taking brown anoles avidly,so I would give them a shot, sometimes the snakes don't read the same reference materials that you do!

Then I kept trying pinks, but he still refused. So one day I was out of pinks,so I tossed in a fuzzy,I think he hit it before it hit the ground!!
