Will a gravid female eat?

krusty Sep 04, 2006 02:26 PM

I have three females that I currently thought were gravid. I saw multiple breedings and also saw ovulation a little over 35 days ago. They all shed 30-32 days later from each ovulation. I was expecting eggs in approximately 3-4 weeks. Well I had offered food each time I was feeding the rest of my group but the three had stopped eating right after the ovulation I saw. Now this last time I fed 2 of the three ate. I was a little concerned because I wasnt expecting them to eat. Anyone have females that ate during this period or should I put my male back and see what happens? My male is still breeding strong on 2 other femlaes and he is is still eating also. Shawn

Hello,

I have never had a female eat after ovulation. My guess is they are not gravid.

How long have you been breeding these pairs? Did you recently start?

Thanks, Christy

The male wasnt ready until mid season so I didnt start him on them until June. He then went right to town and started breeding like crazy. I would leave him in for 2 days trake him out give a day break and put in with another female this cycle went on for over a month on 6 girls. I saw 3 ovulations and then got the post shed right at 30 days when I expected it. They stopped ating right when they ovulated and had no interest until Sat when the 2 of 3 ate. I just put my male back in with 1 of the 2 and he is now trying to breed her again and she has her tail up for him....So I dont know. I guess Ill keep cycling him as long as he can handle it. Oh by the way he is producing sperm.

Hi Krusty,

It seems unusual to me that your girls would ovulate after only a month. Typically it takes several months for them to get to that point, (up to four or five sometimes). Of course, it's possible they were already developing follicles before he started breeding. Still, my guess is that they are not gravid, sorry .

They were breeding 6 moths prior to me putting them with him. I gave up on them laying this year and then decided to put him in. He then went to town and was breeding them all like crazy.
