Advice on framing a 6'x2'x2' sav cage

blackshirej Aug 04, 2003 11:28 PM

I'm gonna be building a cage for my sav monitor measuring approx. 6'x2'x2'. I'm wanting to set this up in place of my dresser so I can set my tv, vcr, stereo, etc on top so I will probably build some form of compartment to put the basking lights in under the actual top. The top will need to support a lot of weight. What would you all suggest I use to frame it? 2x4's or 2x2's? Also what thickness of plywood should I use and how should I seal it? Any advice for cheap hinged doors, screening, getting air circulation? Oh yeah... how should I set it up to hold a deep enough substrate in? I know I'll obviously need to set my doors up high enough that it won't spill out?
Thanks,
Josh

I would frame it with the 2x4's and probably use 3/4 inch plywood (better safe than sorry). That will make it pretty heavy, but I'm guessing its not supposed to be portable, considering your TV ect.s going on it. good luck.

Thanks,
I just wanted to make sure the 2x4's wouldn't be too big for the frame ...and yeah, i'm designing it to basically be about as portable as a refrigerator. I don't plan on ever moving it any until I move out...and then I'll just get a few buddies to help me.
Thank again,
Josh

One more little piece of advice: Make sure after it is built it will make all the doorways and turns it has to make to get into the right room. I thought I was smart, cutting pieces in the garage and assembling cage in living room. Was a good idea, except I couldn't make the turn from the hallway into my reptile room. Luckily, it fit down the stairway, so now my iguana shares the basement with my 12 ft burmese python (both in seperate cages of course).
