New snake funny story. kinda long

captotterboy Sep 04, 2006 07:13 PM

Hey everyone.
I am normally over at the chameleon forum, but i wanted to let everyone know i just got a snake at the philadelphia expo this past weekend.

Its a female jungle cal king. I got her for 30 and than the 5 gallon setup was another 30 (i already had some stuff). She is about 16 inches long.

I took her out tonight after dinner to see how she was doing and to see if her cage needed anything. I didnt realize it at the time, but the whole house smelled like the pork i cooked. I was handling her and she seemed very active like she was searching for something. I put her down on the coffee table (which is where i ate dinner a few minutes before) and when i reached for her again i noticed she had a hold of the end of my finger. It was not a defensive bite (she wasnt curled up or trying to get away or anything like that) She let go of my finger for a second, re-adjusted to a different part of my finger and tentativly bit down again. Realizing my finger was too large a meal, she went right back to the coffee table tp try and find where that delicious (it was good) smell was comming from.

She is too small to hurt me, but i learned a valuable lesson about king snakes and their agressive eating habits;

Dont handle snakes if the room smells like meat. A good lesson to learn when she is 16 inches rather than 60.

Pictures comming soon.

Jeff

im not sure if you miss typed or not but if you have that snake in a 5 gallon tank you will be upgrading like yesterday. that is too small when the snake starts to grow. i would bet you have less than 6 months of use out of that tank. when its small its ok but kings grow quick when fed properly. my mbk was 16 inches 5 months ago and is now 2 ft long i do feed her a lot but you get the picture

The plastic cage is definatly temporary, and if i get a few months out of it thats fine. It is really inexpensive and the accesories inside can be reused for other animals. I have a 20L or (what i think is a ) 45L tank for her when she is ready. I think i will start with the 20L and than move to the larger when she is close to fully grown.

While i have you here, i have a question. My 20L has one of those fitted backgrounds. It is appoxied to the back of the cage and the sides are foamed in than covered with silicon and coconut fiber to protect them and to make them safe for animals (i used this set up for some lizards before i moved them into a different tank) Is this background ok?

it should be ok as long as the silicone has had enough time to air off(no smell left). which is normally only a few days which if you used it for animals before it should be more than done airing off.
