trimming claws

brobs907 Sep 04, 2006 08:20 PM

well I need to trim the claws on Jerry. (1.5 year old male) He's pretty fiesty so I thought I would use the taco method of putting him in a towel. How far can I cut up on his claws I tried looking at them but couldn't see any vein or nerve in there to use as a guide. (comparing to how you would cut a dog's claws)

In books they show how far you can cut.
Basically, if you can't see the vein, just clip the "quick" (yes, that's how it's called).

Here's a link with image (scroll down).

Good luck!

That's because the vein runs up the nail, almost to the tip. We had Iggi's nails clipped ONE time by our herp vet, and he made her bleed. We now don't need to trim Iggi's nails, as she wears them down herself, walking on our cement driveway during her daily walks outside.

ok well I don't have a book and I think that if I let Jerry outside he would run away = )

so what should I do? just trim the very end? (the sharp part) ?

how do you allow your ig to free roam outside without him running away? I am afraid to let mine down outside without a leash, in fear that if he gets away how will I find him, however i've noticed that alot of owners allow their ig's to go outside without holding them or a leash...
How do you know he won't run away?
I would love to let mine walk around the yard.
thanks

Iggi doesn't run away, because she is already where she wants to be. In HER yard! LOL! She shows this almost every day with head bobbing displays to every person/thing that she thinks needs to be reminded who is the queen around here. We tried a leash once, and Iggi alligator rolled until she was chocking to death. We have raised Iggi like one of our children. She comes up to the door when she wants inside, and waits for us to open it. She is a whole house free roamer, with her own bed, in her own bedroom. Here she is in her garden.
