I'm going to attempt to show an easy way to build a false bottom using Coco Tek slabs. These are 3" thick, 6" wide, and 36" long, and can be cut into any shape or form, or split apart for thinner slabs. This is a coarse cocoanut fiber which has apparently been stiffened and preserved with some sort of latex dip. I'm just guessing at this, but they neither deteriorate nor break down, while isolating the water in the false bottom from the substrate on top of the slabs. I usually put a layer of weed cloth between the Coco Tek slabs and the substrate, just to filter out fine particles of soil that may eventually clog the Coco Tek slabs. You can cut out or arrange any sort of ponds, while the slabs will hold up the terrestrial substrate.
Here are some first photo examples: #1 is the Coco Tek slabs cut and fitted to the bottom of a 20 gallon hex tank. The next one is a picture of me my son snuck in. The third is the split coco fiber slabs used as a drip wall with a cap of the same in place to divert the water through the split Coco fiber. You can see the maxi pump in place. I'm having some computer problems with my server hanging up on me, so I'll continue this with another post.
