rossalleni vs. quadrivittatus

Jan Grathwohl Sep 05, 2006 07:45 AM

Hi to all of you

Do any of you have any 100% garantied way to tell wether an obsoletus is a rosalleni or quadrivittatus?

I have a few supposed rosallenies which are quite yellowish (more than orange), but have heard that they can be quite variable. Some says that the tongue is different between the two "subspecies".

Can any of you comment on a way to differentiate?

J. Walls says that Yellows have a black tongue while Everglades will have red tongue, but I have some very yellow snakes that have red tongues. The snakes in the photos may be intergrades. They look more like Yellows than Everglades to me.

That's true. Pure yellows will have black tongues while everglades will have orange/red tongues. the iris colors are different as well. I caught many rat snakes in south florida as a kid and probably most were intergrades with black/red tongues and intermediate in color. They're all cool though. Many people are breeding pure forms of both.

This Female Yellow Rat Snake has a red tongue, but is shows no trace of Everglades in its coloring. Its brother is a very light yellow, and makes this one look dark. Something she is not.
