A coworker found this outside the office and came and got me so I could check it out. First I thought garter because of the stripes, but the more I played around with it I thought it was too heavy bodied so I thought watersnake. It was very bitey and definatily musk me. I know I look like a wimp using a stick with such a small snake, but still haven't gotten used to being bit, but my 4.5' carpet is working on getting me over that...

Big ol' garter, probably a female.

That looks to be an Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis s. sirtalis). The lateral stripe on scale rows 2 and 3 seems to nail it down. Hopefully someone with more Garter knowlege will confirm or deny this.

BTW - nice stick technique!

That is an eastern garter snake. Probably a female by her size. They can get up to 3 feet long.
