abscess in mouth

nine-0-proof Sep 06, 2006 09:32 AM

Hi,

I have a yearling male western hognose that has developed what seems to be an abscessed rear fang on his left side. The left side of his face is really puffy and you can see some fleshy tissue sticking out of his mouth where it is swollen. He is still small for being a yearling. He still eats but the problem has not gone away. I am looking for a vet in my area to take him to. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever encontered a problem like this. I dont expect the vet to be an expert on the subject, and I wanted to try to get some advice before I went to the vet.

Thanks,
Bob

I have never had this problem with any of my western hognose. I have had it occur with some of my other snakes, kings, milks, etc. I used a Q-Tip and listerine and cleaned the infected area 1X daily for 3 days straight. No reason why this would not work for your hog.

My vet had me treat a malagasy speckled hognose with injectible baytril for a mouth infection. He also gave me some other stuff (I forget what) to swab the area with. That was several years ago, and the snake recovered and is fine. Hope that this helps.
