Question about

Sinster Sep 06, 2006 04:51 PM

the other eggs that my dog didn't happen to get a hold of. It's pretty late in the season should I be concerned that they won't hatch before first frost? Should I transplant them into the house?

Also the little guy I have now should I release him back into the wild? If not will I be ever to release it back into the wild? It was a wild turtle (that sounds funny)that laid the eggs. My dog just happened to help this one little fellow come out of its shell a little early.

Will they hibernate once they break out of the shell? The days are getting colder and I'm afraid the others will not make it before first frost.

Hatchlings can and do overwinter in the nest.

I have three youngsters here that were all found in the adults' pen in the late spring/early summer which was way too early to have been that year's babies, but they showed not signs of growth apart from the initial yolk absorbtion related growth. This led me to believe that they had indeed overwintered in their nest and emerged when the ground had warmed up.

They are all thriving.
