Is this normal? Stunted growth UroMali

Barbedwirecat Sep 06, 2006 07:14 PM

Hi,
I received a 2.5 year old "adult" Uromastyx about 5 months ago. He was about 6" S to V when I got him. I was told he was in the appropriate conditions before i got him UV light, heat about right. I received him from a sad little boy that wasn't interested in him anymore. He was eating ok, but I was told to "handfeed" him and that he wouldn't eat any other way. I tried to break him of this habit, as all they could get him to eat was mealyworms and a little bit of greens. He was skiney. Over the months he has begun eating all by himself (I'm so proud) and eating like a PIG!! He seems to be getting a little bit bigger, but its hard to tell.

However....he's still small. And he still looks like a juvinile. I had not though about posting something here about his stunted growth, but now I'm wondering---How big is a 3 year old Mali supposed to be? Here is a pic of him--

1 Bearded Dragon (Butterfinger)
1 Mali Uromastyx (Groucho)
1 Argentine Horned Frog (Mcfatfat)
1 Togo Starburst Tarantula
1 Blue Cobalt Tarantula
1 Rosehair Tarantula
1 African Spitting Scorpion
1 Betta Splendins
1 Spectacled Amazon (Indiana Jones)
8 Button Quail (I promise they all have names)
1 Spaztic black kitty (Nikkita)
1 Baby Hairless rat (looking for a name)
3 WOW char (they are pets too.)
Even us girls can like slimey scaley and squishy things.

She is small. My male is stunted too I think. He has only grown maybe 1-2 inches in the past 2.5 years. I dont know his age, but he did suffer a bad tail infection that I think slowed his growth down.

My female grew rapidly at one point but has since slowed her growth down. She went from 4 to 9 inches over a 3 month period but has since gained only about 3 more inches in the past 12 months.

I don't know the answer to your original question, but I just have to say I love the picture of him playing video games! He's cute, too...looks like Bruce!

Hi, if you are unsure if he is growing I would start to get weights on him monthly. That way you can tell.

Carole

PS he is very cute

It could have been "stunted" from not eating right due to stress. Probably didn't have the right environment. Alsp if the original owners started feeding him by hand (as kids especially are want to do) so they could see him eat he may have felt like if he didn't eat it from your hand he wouldn't get it. I don't know, but that's what first came to mind. His diet also was most likley lacking too.
I'm so glad you gave him such a good home, he looks healthy and happy in the pics!!!
