Finally finally...

JLC Aug 05, 2003 01:22 AM

We finally brought our little fella home! He's a lovely red cape gopher we named Caesar. I'm not sure how old he is, but he is about 18" long. I finally got the temperature in his home under control (with a lower watt bulb and a dimmer switch) and am looking forward to being able to start handling him.

He curled around his water dish and then went right into his hidey hole. We haven't seen him come out since Sunday, but he's switched positions in there, so I know he's moving around. I'm assuming he'll get more active when he starts to get hungry again!

If anyone thinks he should be more obviously active now (He may be crawling all over the place when no one is looking! *LOL*) or if anyone has any general advice to offer to such a newb...feel free!

Thanks for providing such a welcoming place to come and learn...

*drools* Capes are on my wish list, oh well You're starting well, enjoy!
Snakes, even pits, are nowhere near as active as a mammal. And good luck handling him, my gopher finally is calming down at 4 years old *L* She's a sweetie now though. Of course, at 18 inches, I doubt it matters if you get nipped. It's amusing when they try it at that size.

Thanks! He's a little beauty. I can't wait to get some pictures so I can show him off.

I saw him outside finally this morning when I went to turn his light on. My daughter will be thrilled! (She's only 10 but already sleeps in like a teenager...*LOL*)

I'll get her set up on the forum and introduce her soon!

woohoo i am so happy for you. i recently got a sonoran gopher snake that hardly ever comes out of his hidebox except in the mornings. he is so docile too and he is wc so the fact that he is so calm is amazing. well glad you finally got him!

you got one of the finest pits out there. They are a bit shyer than most, he will run and hide once it sees you but will get more active in time. I would also feed it small meals and at time when it can dine in secret. I have two capes that eat great but I have never seen either one take their food. They always wait till I'm gone, now my other pits have no problem snatching food right out my hands if they can LOL!!!

The also seem to enjoy cooler temps like us humans, 78 deg ave.

Good luck - Del
