Pet Store Frusteration...

lefty82 Sep 07, 2006 01:25 PM

The pet store from which I bought my first leo (the one that wasted away within 2 days) is the only place around where I can buy crickets. I have been planning on just ordering them online, but I am never home during the day to pick up the package, so I have procrastinated on that. Anyway, this store is really upsetting me and I need to vent.

First of all, while waiting for my crickets, I noticed they were selling albino babies for $45. I asked the owner what kind and he said he had no idea - the invoice didn't say. No offer to look into it, not even an offer to give me the supplier's phone number so I could find out myself. I'm not looking to buy, but I thought that some more customer service would have been nice.

There are about 10 of them in a 10 gallon tank, and they have 1 hide (it isn't humid). They are on wood shavings and burrow underneath their water dish as a hide. The lights in their home were very bright, too, so when I got a look at them, they all were squinting. I'm sure they'll go to nicer homes soon though as the leos seem to go fast there.

But the thing that really upsets me is there is a full-grown bearded dragon in MAYBE a 20 gallon tank. It looks smaller than that, actually. It barely has any room and everytime I go in, she's on her hind legs pressing herself against the glass begging to get out. If I had more room and money, I would be tempted to buy her just because she's been there for at least 3 months now (since i've been going in - she's probably been there since she was a baby), and just looks so miserable.

A lot of the employees, including the owner, seem to have an bad attitude. I can't quite explain it but my boyfriend picked up on it too.

So, I'm done with this pet store. I really want to start ordering my feeders online, but I need a company that would be willing to have the package left at the door if nobody is home - I don't care if it negates some sort of "live delivery guaruntee." Can anybody reccommend a few good websites or does that break some sort of advertising rule on this forum??

Hello again

I understand how you feel about pet stores, I dislike most of the ones around here too. They usually employ young teenagers who are more worried about their hair than the condition of the animals. The petsmart near me has one guy who seems to be truly trying to help customers when they buy leos, and even went as far as to learn the genetics behind the morphs so he could better explain why this one has brown eyes, or this one has different colors, etc. He even knows the strain of albino that his store carrys (trempers) which is good to know considering two of my leos (a blazing and an albino) both came from his store. Then the other places arnt so good, one of which I dont even go into anymore because the employees dislike me coming in because I ALWAYS point out the wrong food in with the iguanas, the thin condition of half their lizards, the shedding condition of their snakes, etc. They do just enough to keep from getting in trouble though .

As for the ordering, I love wormman.com. So far Ive ordered like 7 thousand crickets and 1 thousand superworms from him. I used to just buy from a pet store because they didnt care and usually overcounted (100 cost $9 but I usually got like 300 crickets :D. Then when I got my bearded dragon, which Ive since sold, 300 per week wasnt quite enough for all my pets. I would also recomend breeding mealworms, they are REALLY handy to have when you suddenly have a lot of geckos to feed and havent ordered crickets. Plus you can have the from the tiny size to the large size so they are good for maintaining different age groups of geckos.

Good luck, Ill probably run into you again on the gecko group as well as here. send me a message if you have questions.

Wormman is the best! I've used them for years, and they've been great. They have a really great ongoing sale for 1000 Crickets & 1000 Mealworms. It's like $23, I believe. Hope that helps!

I actually ordered that 1000 crickets and 1000 worms deal last night. I am never home, but I have a friend who owns a coffee shop so they'll be delivered there. I hope the baristas don't decide to open up the package, or they're in for a surprise!

Just so you know, you don't have to be there to receive wormman's crickets. At least, I've never had to. And when I am home, the UPS guy just leaves the package at the door and rings the doorbell.

I also reccomend wormman's worm farm!! I bought 1000 crickets, 250 waxworms, and 250 superworms for $42 and change delivered to my door. I don't remember who delivered them, I was home all day and they never knocked or rang the bell. Great quality and service, just be sure you have a place to keep the crickets in
