Lighting question.........

joshhutto Sep 07, 2006 03:02 PM

Me and my wife have finally decided to add a sulcata tort to our collection of herps. We picked up an 06 cb tort from a local breeder. He is being set-up in a 20 gallon long aquarium for now. He is being kept in our snake room that is kept at a constant 82 degrees. I know he needs a hotter basking area up to around 100 degrees. He has a shallow dish to allow him to soak and drink. He is being fed a mixture of grasses, weeds, hibiscus leaves and flowers and he will receive a small quanity of vegies once a week. All food is being lightly dusted with phos-free no D3 calcium suppliment. The problem we are having is what wattage of bulb to purchase for his/her cage. Unfortunately we don't have access to a specialty shop and must order online which could get very expensive if we have to buy several bulbs to hit the right temps with sufficient UVB lighting. The bulb will be roughly 14-18" from him if that helps anyone with a suggestion. Thanks in advance for any help from you tort experts.

Hey, I'm sorry for replying without answering your question. I'm sure you'll get some good replies on this forum. But, if you still want more, people with a lot of Bearded Dragon experience usually have an intimate knowledge of lighting products and how they work in situ. Many chelonian keepers shy away from aquariums. I hope you find your info.

I agree that aquariums aren't the best idea to keep any reptile but due to space limitations I am unable to build a suitable tort table at the moment. this aquarium is temp housing as I luckily live in south florida and after the tort get's a little size on him/her it will live outside for most of the year where they really need to be in the first place.
