OTTAWA SUN (Ontario) 07 September 06 Turtle Crusher Punished
A Crysler teen has been fined $100 and must make a school presentation on the importance of the northern map turtle as punishment after deliberately driving over one and leaving it on the side of the road. The turtle was a mature female carrying eggs when it was killed in June. L. Craig Gibeault, 19, was with a group of teens who found the turtle on the side of a road. They put the turtle under the wheels of the vehicle and Gibeault drove over it. He must give a presentation to students at Notre Dame Rosaire School in Crysler on the significance of the species, after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a northern map turtle. Jenny Pearce, who runs a conservation education program, called the act "sickening" and said it "could have killed 500 eggs" that the turtle may have laid over the course of her lifetime.
