jumping at lights, scratching at walls

sunbirdx Sep 07, 2006 09:19 PM

Hey All,
My boy bender is 2 years old, and has recently developed the habit of jumping at the heat lamps and scratching incessantly at his tank walls (which are smooth wood, so it isn't his reflection). Temps are fine (via infrared thermometer). Any ideas as to why he might be doing this. I am worried that he isn't "happy", and I am really not sure what to do. Please advise.

Hi there,

My boy does exactly the same thing every now and again. It's apparently called 'the dragon dance' or so i've read.
It doesn't mean anything is wrong, it's just that they seem to enjoy doing it. I see it as a form of exercise really. Every time he works his little legs against the side of his viv, all those calories from the wax worms are being worked away:OD

Nice pic by the way. Looks just like mine did whe i first got him a 4 weeks ago. He's got used to me now tho.
Will post pics as soon as available.

Hope that helps.

Sounds like restless energy. Take him out of the cage for a bit each day, give him something interesting and new to do. If the cage is too small, it could be that as well. Check around his lights for any small flies, he may be trying to get at them.

It isn't a sign anything is wrong with him health wise, just alot of excess energy or maybe boredom that cause dragons to do this.
