Found my first Box Turtle

minicopilot Sep 08, 2006 08:28 AM

I was driving along a busy road with heavy woodlands on both sides and saw my first Box Turtle crawling on the shoulder in the grass. I picked her up and took a few bad pictures with my cell phone and released her deeper in the woods. She was huge, lots of yellow and had the brightest red eyes. I'd say she was fairly old going by her size and the war wounds to her shell.
I've been herping for about 35 years and never found one of these till a couple of weeks ago!
She was found in Pelham New Hampshire which is about 40 miles North of Boston.
Nice to see a beauty like that in this area.

glad to know they are still findable.. even if it does take years to find one, I am under the impression that we have none left here in NW MA, I've found plenty of wood turtles but no easterns, I've talked to people who've been going out longer than I have and they've not seen any either..

I thought they were a myth in these parts. I've been looking for them since I was about 5!
Now to see if there are really Rattlers out there.

What an awesome find that was. I felt like a kid again!
