How clean is too clean?

sheshanaga Sep 08, 2006 03:55 PM

I'm about to to my first total clean out of my corn snake enclosure. How cautious do I need to be when cleaning poops, etc?

I always am concerned while handling pinkies and cleaning the poops that are out in the open, but I always wonder to what level should I be concerned. So far, I dip my hemostats in alcohol when I'm done with them and then I wash my hands with soap and then finish with that alcohol gel stuff.

When cleaning, I also rinse from the cage things off in the kitchen sink. Do I have to be hospital clean with this stuff, or is wiping things down with soap good enough?

Anti-Bacterial dish soaps seem to be pretty good. Never use glass cleaners or pine sol and items like that. If you want to go crazy a 10% bleach solution is good too. Just let it air out good. It's called off gasing. Rinse well too of course.

Just my 2 cents.

God is the architect to genetics. And just as we learn the building he has constructed, I think he adds a room on once in a while just to mess with us. He does like to laugh at us. It is so easy.

As clean as you are getting your enclosures...be twice as cautious in cleaning out that kitchen sink, if you're using that to rinse out your stuff. Not only is salmonella a possibility (rare as it is), the formation of a phorrid fly population in your sink drain is WAY more trouble than you can imagine.

It's better if you can just rinse everything out some where outside of the house...

What type of fly is that? Is it something like fruit flies? If that happens, what can be done to get rid of them?

I need to increase my numbers. I don't like binary code.

...and fairly mild. Another option is white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide (each sprayed from separate bottles, but applied at the same time).

And as Darin said, kitchen sinks aren't really the best sinks for snake cleaning... If you have the option, a dedicated sink for cage cleaning is the best way to go.
