Got a light box set up, and Worm was my first victim...errr...model.

Worm is about a year old,and a complete angel. He will through temper tantrums in the form of a tail rattle, but that is only when I'm trying to take him out of somewhere he shouldn't be (couch cushions?)...or he gets a bit riled up right after he eats. Hehehe. But other than that, he's actually calmer than my corn and ball python when held. In his tank he's the shyest thing ever though.

Yeah, he was the only one who would. My other snakes got excited by the warm lights and new ground to explore.

It's basically a small, white nylon box with one side missing. The subject is placed in side of it, and lights are placed outside of it...so all of the light hitting the subject is soft.

Jenn,

I have to say, I generally don't like the large diffuse effect a light box. I have one and have tried it with a variety of herps. I also generally don't like snakes photographed on a reflective surface.

That said, this is a perfect example of where those two things work! The diffuse light really brings out the texture of the white scales and the monochromatic image really works with the mirror.

Nice stuff.

Thats very nice - did you put up a diagram or explanation of your lightbox? I've been planning on making one foe some time. Just a note: the grain in the dark parts of the photo can be reduced if you can adjust the ISO on your camera.

Thanks for the tip! I started expirementing with that today. I really know very little about photography. Every time I sign up for a class, I get a last minute gig and have to cancel. Grrr. I'm debating just buying a book and trying to teach myself. Up until now, everything has been trial and error, experimentation, and taking a few hundered shots to get a few good ones...hehehehe.

As for the light box set up, I purchased it...on ebay. Hehehe. It's a 16" x 16" white nylon box with back drops and an acrylic platform. It came with two lights which are set up outside of the box shining in, and the subject is placed on the box. It's fun and simple.
