Choice of Kingsnake

Geckofanatic23 Sep 09, 2006 03:59 PM

Hi, I posted a while back about MBK's, but I'm still having trouble choosing the kingsnake I want. I've owned a lovely little Cal-king for five months until she somehow escaped from a tank with a locked and weighted lid. I'm pretty sure I want something different than a cal-king.I've looked at Brooksi, Thayeri, and MBK's, and they all appeal to me. Are there any pros or cons making one species a better pet than the other? What are some of the redeeming qualities of the different kinds listed? I can house an adult of any of the above species, so size isn't that big of an issue. I'd really appreciate hearing from those of you who keep these king species, so I can make an informed decision. Thanks a bunch!

I believe the "brooksi" aka Florida kings make all around tougher captives.
The Florida neonates are not as spastic as the cal kings ( ie,.deficate, high strung ect)and brooksi get a little bigger and heavy bodied than the other snakes you listed.

My thayeri hides alot, my mbk doesn't. They both feed well, my mbk feeds better.I am hearing thayeri are a little harder to start feeding, but I think it is just a patience issue, my mbk's all start readily. They both grow slow for me but I don't powerfeed. It seems like they have a growth spurt in their second year for me and then turn into trashcans. I don't have brooksi yet but hear they are always willing to oblige in the garbage can department! I love 'em both but mbk's are a no problem snake for me, but a real pretty thayeri is hard to beat! A tie!

I have Brooksi, Eastern Kings, Knoblochis, AZ Mountain Kings, and GBKs. All of them are awesome! They are docile as heck. I also think Thayeri are really nice, but I don't have any yet. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ones I mentioned, as long as they are already feeding. You could go to a local reptile show to check most of them out. I think most of them should be available at shows. Don't rush it. Take your time. Picking one out is a big decision. Here are some of mine. If you need some breeders names, let me know. Derek
