Little snake in NC

BDKesling Sep 09, 2006 09:26 PM

Found this little guy in the yard today. I'm new to NC, but he looks a lot like the ringed neck snakes we had in West Virginia (minus the ring). Anyway, it's the smallest snake I've ever seen or held, the ring he's in is a size 10.5 wedding band.

Any info on what type of snake it is would be appreciated,
Thanks
Brian

That would be a neonate Eastern wormsnake (Carphophis amoenus)

I have to have to agree with juv. Wormsnake (Carphophis), but I couldn't safely eliminate a juvenile Earthsnake (Virginia) without a side view of the head.

The snake was in an area without grass, otherwise I'd have never seen it. After handling it a little while to check it out, I released it into an area of pine needles. After some minor prompting, it vanished into the needles.

When I first tried to pick it up, it tried to slither quickly. Funny to watch, as it didn't have enough mass for it's belly scales to be effective. Once calm, it slithered quite well.
