Tank for two baby common snappers

athos_76 Aug 05, 2003 08:27 AM

I just built a new cage for my burm and red tail boa, and I have a Sea-Clear 55 gallon show left over. 48"Lx13"Dx20"H. Do you think that would be too big for the little guys right now? They are both around 3" or so. I think it would be ok, since they would have the space to have their own areas in the tank, and the lil lagoon I have them in now is too small, even though they are hatchlings..

thing about snappers is generally they like to hang out in shallow water and stretch their necks up for air. but in creeks they generally hang out in undercuts. A 55 would be great for them, but if you fill it up, make sure there are plenty of shallow places they could hang out in like rocks, logs, or floating vegetation. I suppose plastic basking areas below the water level would work too. Heres one thing ive done, get plastic poultry netting from the hardware store, and hang it inside the tank on the walls. you could hang it with a number of things I imagine, i used stainless tig wire. If you use metal, make sure its stainless so it doesnt rust. I suppose suction cups might work too. That way the snappers can do the creek thing and just hang on the walls. And of course, feeding in a separate container is a good idea since these babies will shred anything they eat.

one other thing, common snapping turtles are excellent climbers, ive seen adults climb over 8 foot chain link fence. Make sure if you give them plastic poultry netting that they cant use it to climb out of the tank.
