Pine/Bull feeding response?

Drosera Sep 10, 2006 01:04 AM

I'm looking to get a second snake and am eyeing leucistic southern pines as a strong possibility.

My Cal King, dear though she is to me, is currently a display animal due to her habit of crawling around peacefully and then chomping into an unscented finger/hand/whatever with the same leisure and relish that I exhibit with belgian chocolates. Heedless of what she's recently eaten.

I'd like to have an animal for handling. Do pine and bull snakes share any such leaning? And also any thoughts on the dispositions of southern pines in general? I'm fairly familiar with Cal kings and pacific gopher snakes, if that helps give a basis for comparison.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it.

LOL! That's hilarious.

My southern is an angel.

While her feeding response has morphed into what resembles a kings feeding response, I have had ZERO problems with her. All of my kids handle her, and she's never bitten, nor hissed. (3 % 6 year old)

Occasionally, she'll rattle her tail, but that's it.

What's funny is that when I got her, she was so gentle and deliberate when it came to feeding, I would hand feed her. (for about the first 8 months or so.) Then one day, she must have seen a brooksi eat or something, because one day while hand feeding her, she went absolutely ape#@$%, and SMASHED the rat- I mean, ballistic! Don't get me wrong, I LOVED it, but it took me totally by surprise.

She is my favorite in the collection- so much so, that I'm picking another one up (male) from nokturnel Tom when his clutch hatches...

One of my favorite thing about bullsnakes is that they don't bite without warning. Even the ones that are biters and hate being handle usually don't bite once you pick them up unless you reach for their heads. There are always exceptions though. oh also I never had one crap on me, unlike cal kings.

Thanks you both for the replies! And the stories. Yeah, I'll definitely keep my eye out for one of the critters.
