i said L@@K at the size of that Gopher Tortoise cruising my fence line this morning, it appears to be a Sulcata(male), BTW it sometimes freezes here in N. Central Florida,will this guy bury himself in the Winter? brumate? look like a fairly old fellow i live in pine/oak sand scrub.

yep, looks like a sulcata. Possibly someone left it in the nature after it got too big for them to take care of.

i would take adopt it, does not look like a gopher tortoise, but like other said a sulcata. If it does get to freezing, then the sulcata will try and dig and stay warm, but most likly not make the winter. They just arnt made to go through winters.

Actually, quite a few Florida tortoise keepers that I know keep their sulcatas outdoors all winter long. If they dig a burrow deep enough to get below the freeze, they will probably do just fine.
I really wouldn't like to see them get established in the wild in Florida along with all the other exotics already there.
Someone should take it home.
