Greetings. The tragic loss of Mr. Irwin this past week has re-ignited my interest in snakes. I have had a snake (Annika) for just shy of five years now. The pet store labeled it 'rat snake', but pictures I have posted here in the past indicated it was possibly a cross breed of rat snake, corn snake, and possibly even fox snake. One of the neat features of it is the nornal arrow on the head is only partially there, so it is a heart and two triangles. I would like to try breeding it with an okeetee corn because i love okeetees and I would like to see if i could get a red-hearted snake!
I recently ordered a set of sexing probes and I saw exactly how to use them from a video on Kathy Love's page. I am pretty sure my snake is female (based on feedback from posting tail pictures here) but I want to make sure before I get a second snake.
I would also like to upgrade the snake's enclosure, which bring me to the topic. The current enclosure is a basic screen-topped glass tank that is about 12"x12"x30". Annika is just shy of 4 feet long. I have been looking around and I like what i see at Showcase Cages (http://www.showcasecages.com/cage_details.htm). If anyone has thoughts on these, I would welcome any feedback. My main question is would a corn snake be better off in a taller enclosure (36x24x24) or a longer enclosure (48x18x24)? Would the taller one with a branch or something to climb on be better than a short wide tank? Or are these enclosures bad for some other reason?
thanks
jorj
