gil6 Sep 10, 2006 08:17 PM

I have a group of ball pythons in a vision rack system. I currently a cheaper thermostat with a dial to set the temperature. I want to get it set up to a timer. Do i need to buy one with a night drop feature buit in ? if so which is a good one to buy? thanks

Why don't you just buy a lamp timer and plug the thermostat into that? Then when you want the heat shut off, the timer will do it for you.

If you want a nightime temperature drop, but not off, then you will need a thermostat that is capable of this. Another option is to use two independent heat sources (two strips of heat tape, for example) and turn one off at night.

The Big Apple proportional controller has a night-drop feature; you need to supply the appliance timer. Other models are available. See MG Reptiles (He advertises in the classifieds alot.)

You can use the existing thermostat and plug it into a timer. That will give you no heat output though. The nice thing about the night-drop feature built-in is that you can select how much of a temp drop you want, rather than all or none.

I have always liked the idea of 2 heaters per cage, and shutting off one at night like Chris mentioned. With few snakes, I can afford to have 2 heaters per cage, but I realize not everyone is setup for that.
