WTF with tumor?

samster Sep 10, 2006 09:29 PM

Hi...its been a very long time since I've posted on here, but I have a dilemma and want to ask for some advice. I've had my lovely Whites tree frog Pepe for about 9 years now. Shes always been fat and happy and healthy. I've started to notice in the last few days that she is really bloated. I usually don't handle her, but tonight when I picked her up, I can feel a hard mass inside her abdomen. It's mostly on her right side, and is probably the size of a large marble. She is in a 20 gallon tall aquarium with screen top, undertank heater (under her water dish) and is in my warm plant room (gets 85 degrees or so during the day). Her substrate is terrarium moss, and she has had the same substrate for whole life. I live in Wyoming and there are no vets in the area who treat herps. Do you think it could be possible that she is blocked up, and that's what is so hard in her? or is it more likely that she's got a tumor. Also, she's pretty weak in her back legs too it seems. If she is constipated, is there anything that can be done to help her pass it? If she seems to be suffering, is there any good way to euthanize a frog? I work in a lab where I have access to CO2 (we kill bugs this way), but I just want to do whatever is in her best interest. I'm completly devistated, as she has been my little baby for a long time. Any advice is appreciated. Heres a pic of my girl (the big one) with her old boyfriend who died last year.

Well, I just wanted to give an update about Pepe today. I found a vet in town that supposedly treats herps, so I took her in this mornign. She is impacted =(. The vet won't do surgery on her (she really shouldn't even claim to treat herps, she has no clue). she tried giving her enema with mineral oil and salt water to help her pass the stool. She also gave her pineapple juice (i guess it breaks down hairballs in cats so she thought it might break down the moss??) she squeezed on her belly a lot, and when I got her home, her whole underside and back legs are like spotted with little red what look like blood vessels. she got so stressed, I think if the impaction didn't kill her, the vet may have. I'm heartbroken, and angry that I even took her to the vet. I'm going to try to continue to give her warm water soaks, and hope that she might be able to miraculously pass it, but my hopes aren't high. Poor baby. To anyone out there..make sure your "herp vet" actually knows what they are doing before you take your pets to them.

Wow, the frog's skin is so sensitive, I'm surprised she would actually do that! Squeezing... wow that was bad.

Just keep her in warm water. That's really the best way to go I believe. She probably swallowed something, a bit of moss perhaps.

The skin under her legs is red, but it should go away after a while of being left alone. Go and kick the vet for us ok?

Good luck.
