fat or water pouches

smokerofchronic Sep 10, 2006 09:52 PM

I have a 3 year old female leopard gecko (who is a big girl with a huge healthy tail), but she has a fat/water sac behind her front legs (she had them last year and went away) but i need to know if its serious, she seems to be fine, eats normal and has the same activeness....also she has a very strong odour to her she is in a tank with her sister who is normal with no smell and our other 6 leopards are all fine too with no smell...she got the smell after one of our males bit her tail and side and we sprayed her with reptile healing solution and it worked like a hot damn but the smell has been there since....any advice would be helpful thank you....

I am not sure about the smell, but from the literature I've read it sounds like those pouches are normal. They're fat pouches, not water pouches, and it is an indicator that the animal is in good condition to breed.

The blister like pouches are actually calcium deposits, it is how leos store extra calcium. If they are large it is usually suggested to back off dusting a bit.

As for the smell, I hope you have cleaned and completely disinfected (bleach solution is best) the enclosure and everything in it first to rid the smell. (Could be mold or a dead prey item hidden somewhere.) If it is indeed coming from the gecko a trip to a professional might be in order just to make sure there isn't any necrosis(sp) or the like, or many a GI infection.

Are you sure, sleepygecko? In "The Leopard Gecko Manual" on page 41 there is a really good picture of masses behind the forelimbs of a gecko. The caption on the picture says: "Fatty masses behind the forelimbs indicate your geckos are in good condition for breeding."

Maybe some new information came out after the publication of this book??

mine have these also and since i put average of .9g on my females every day and didn't give them straight calcium supliments at all until 40g i would say these are FAT deposits. I've noticed that the quicker they form the more air sac like they tend to be; it took mine 2 weeks to feel like fat.
