Chamaeleo gracilis

samanthajane13 Sep 10, 2006 11:13 PM

Okay-First off, I'm new here...

I'm Donna, from Buffalo, NY

Nice to meet you!!!

My question is...

I know that many chameleons can be sexed by checking external anatomy features-like heel spurs, etc...does this work with C. gracilis, too???

My daughter and I have a young C. gracilis-5 1/2 to 6 inches long from nose to tail tip. Hesheit has heel spurs on it's hind feet, and a bright yellow dewlap-which it takes great pride in displaying if my cat gets too close to his enclosure.

The reason I'm asking is for naming purposes. Right now, it's going by the name Sticky-we thought that was generic enough for the time being, but we agreed to give it a more gender-speific name when we find out what category that would be...

Any info you can share with us would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks so much-in advance!!

Donna, Katey and...um...Sticky

Male C.gracilis are smaller than their counter part. Males also have spured hind feet, a higher casque. You can also tell from teh shape of the vent and tailbase.

So, good luck with Him then.

Thank you sooo much for the rapid response!!!

I'll leave my daughter a note for when she wakes up-

"IT'S A BOY!!"

Maybe I should wait and pick up a formal birth announcement card-no-she'd just try to wring my neck...LOL! Nah-he's a GREAT KID!!!

Well-HE is now Steve-yep-after the Crocodile Hunter-Katey's hero!! (She's 17-volunteers at a pet shopreptile educaton & rescue center, and belongs to PETA with me.)

I feel like I should be handing out cigars...but that's a father's job. I'm just the grandma-to a LIZARD!!! Heee heeee.

Anyway, thanks so much again!!!

I WILL be back...I've learned so much I didn't know about Chams. The forums are great!!!!

Hugs-
Donna

I'm from Buffalo, relocated to the south when my father got a new job. Been here four years and hate the heat...have to finish college before I'm out of friggen Alabama...

Anyway, welcome to the forums. Everyone is usually nice and helpful, and as long as you have a brain and don't ask how to care for this chameleon you just got from the pet store on a whim without research because it was just so cute--you'll be fine.
