Question on nutrition.

m1a1_panda Sep 11, 2006 10:27 AM

'Allo. I've been doing some research online about beardies and caring for them before actually going ahead and purchasing one (smart, yeah?). General knowledge is that you can feed them greens and other veggies alongside crickets and the occasional pinky. Stay with me, this is going somewhere. A favorite snack of mine is rainbow bell peppers (sweet, not hot), and I was wondering if my future beardie would enjoy a sliver of pepper or would it quite possibly make him very ill?

I've only been warned about iceberg lettuce, tho it's not lethal. Are there any other veggies/fruits that beardies absolutely should not have?

I haven't heard of rainbow bell peppers myself, unless it is the name given to regular green bell peppers while changing colors as it ripens (ie red/yellow). Bell peppers are fine to give to bearded dragons, just chop them as finely as appropriate for the size of dragon you are feeding to. For a great nutritional chart showing frequency of feeding various foods to bearded dragons, check the site below.

Other greens to avoid is spinach. Kale can be feed but only sparingly and only when mixed with other wholesome greens and vegetables. Spinach contains something that bines calcium, making it unusable in the body. Kale has something similar. Oh and never feed fireflies (lightening bugs) to bearded dragons or any other reptile for that matter. These are toxic and a single firefly can kill even an adult bearded dragon.

I did mean the yellow and red ones (yummy!). I can't imagine i'd be willing to give my dragon a jalapeno or something.

and i had just read about the fireflies in an article this afternoon. i couldn't catch one if i tried anyway, so it's just as well. would they like tomatoes?

Tomatoes should only be fed rarely, not something every day or every week. Not just the runny stool problem but they do contain things that are not good for dragons. That nutrition chart explains why, I am just to lazy to look it up and type it here right now
