Cleaning Inside of Glass Terranium: Frog

dasmodul Sep 11, 2006 12:08 PM

I have a large glass Exo-terra tank with 2 Red-Eye Tree Frogs and one Green Tree frog. I was wondering what is a safe way to clean water spots off the inside of the glass. I know Windex and all that stuff is poisonous to them so was wondering if there are any solutions that wont bother them? Thanks!

I have this same issue. Just last week I went and got an aquarium glass cleaner (it is a scrubby on a stick) and it says not to use on dry glass (scratches) so I wet it and the glass and lightly scrubbed mine and it was fine.

Now I just read something about using spring water? for misting and that wouldn't leave spots. I'll have to double check. I know we have harder water and maybe that's what the spots are from.

Ok the water spots are definately from the water. Even if you use a water conditionner, you still get spots because it doesn't get rid of all the heavier metals in the water. The best way to do it is to buy the five gallon jugs of water! That's what I use. No more water spots!

To clean the glass, you can also use water and vinegar. *nod*

Really? Wather Vinegar? Seems that vinigar would be strong and hurt the frogs. I'll give it a try.

If your worried about the frogs, just take them out while you are cleaning. Let the tank air a bit then put them back in. Rinse with warm water afterwards, there shouldn't be any residue left. (course if your using your regular water to rinse, you could create more residue)

I think I'd just wipe it with a wet cloth. A microfiber if you have one. They also had wipes at the pet store, but they were super expensive and wasn't quite comfortable with them.

Speaking of taking frogs out, what method do you guys use to grab them without stressing them too much?

Just use a cup or a container that's clean and "shoo" them into it. Place a lid so that they don't escape (not an issue with my white's..)

The "shoo method" works best. As for cleaning the glass the vinegar works very well. It is safe because it completely evaporates. Remember to use distilled white vinegar.
If you become addicted to frogs, you might find a reverse osmosis filter helpful for the mineral spots and for generally clean water.
