help with the new setup?

Just wanted to see what people are using for the bottom substrates of their tanks. My turtle is getting a new tank and we are remodeling but I'm having trouble coming up with a solution for the bottom. I am really cautious about impaction because if the rocks are small enough, my turt will eat them. I would like to use big rocks but do not know what kind. The only kind I see in the stores are big coral rocks and long slate rocks, both are sortof expensive if you buy enough to fill the tank. But he likes to dig and cannot do this in large rocks. I would like to use something natural like how his pond would have a soft bottom, but sand could probably impact and mud wouldn't work well with a filter. What is the best thing to use? What does everyone else use?

You can also get landscape gravel from any home and garden center at Walmart, Homedepot, Lowes, etc. Fairly large, about 1/2 inch to 1 inch around. Its basically rounded small river or beach rocks. Very natural and cheaper than buying something from a petshop. Comes in large plastic bags like mulch or potting soils. I would recommend washing it out real well before putting in the tank.
