dart frog food

GG_HERPS Sep 12, 2006 02:56 AM

Any one got any ideas of what else I could feed to my dart frogs other than fruit flies, pinhead cricketts, and springtails. I have heard that there are a few types of roaches that start out small and would be good feeders. Discoids? maybe. blatta laterallis? does any of these seem right? Just asking as I know nothing about roaches. But I do also have bearded dragons so there would be no left overs. Any ideas would be nice. I would need something that would reproduce like crazy. Thanks in advance for the help.

You can try Indian Meal moths (larval stage); however, the frogs can probably eat adult moths if wing(s) are disabled. You can also refrigerate them a few minutes to help disable flying. Be aware that they are major pantry pests, so would need to be bred in a screened tank or bin.

Also, you can try Lobster roaches; the 1st-3rd nymph stages are small enough for PDFs to eat. The bad point is that they can sometimes climb glass. B. lateralis may be a better roach species for that, but they may be too fast for the frogs.

I forgot to put Rice Flour beetle larva. They are small & good for PDF's too.

Thank you for the list of new foods to try my PDF's with. I have been giving them the same old boring fruit flies and pin head to two week old cricketts for a long time now. I am sure they will like a change. Thanks again for your help.

Lizardman, are you saying dart frogs will eat the larva of rice beetles (AKA flour beetles)? I've been trying to seperate the larva from the adults! I've going to a lot more trouble than I have to.
