substrate question

mlove Sep 12, 2006 12:27 PM

Hi, I have read that washed and screened playsand is okay to use on some bd care sheets and others advise not to use any substrate. Does anyone have experience with playsand and if so what is your opinion?

I use screened playsand for my bearded dragons. I have been using it for awhile now and it has been working rather well. There will some that will totally disagree with this as I'm sure you already know.

I think it all boils down to what you are comfortable keeping your bearded dragons on. I am comfortable with using playsand, while there are others that aren't at all. Who's right? That's usually answered by personal opinion.

Just be careful with the sand you buy. Some of it is rather dusty and can be harmful to your dragons respiratory system. I've bought some that I wouldn't even use in my children's sandbox, because of the dust. Needless to say, I didn't use it.

For the most part washed and screened sand works well. Sift it to get any larger pebbles and grains out of it, but you probably know the drill by now from.

I would suggest that if you are at all worried about using it, don't. You will be always wondering and worrying whether your dragon's okay and horror stories about impaction won't help matters.
