quick water bowl question

burmmania Sep 12, 2006 01:46 PM

for those of you with large burms- what do you use for water bowls? Is it necessary to have one big enough for them to fit into? Cause from the pictures I see apparently it is not......im just wondering because a couple of my burms are now about 8 feet long and they are on the very of not being able to fit into a LARGE water bowl, and my cages are more than edequate space-wise, but the "proper" water would take up a huge portion of the cage.

I use the waterbowls that look like rock. They hold around a half gal each.
My burms dont soak, and the bowl isn't big enough for them to take a dump in. I never felt a reason for a big water bowl, and from what I am seeing, neither have my burms.

I agree. Even though I am sure the snakes might enjoy an occasional soak, I do not feel it is necassary and once they reach a large size it would be pretty impractical to give them a spot to soak unless you built a custom cage with a "pool" in the middle. Most don't have the space to accomodate such a cage. I usually use rubbermade tubs. The rock ones are better since they are much harder for the snake to tip them over but the rubbermades were good too as long as the floor of your cage has been waterproofed. Todd

I agree agree. I made a very large cage and installed a slop sink as a soak tub. All Moses did was crap in it. It was very difficult to clean out and was not worth the hassle. After cleaning it twice I removed it and had to install a piece of stainless steel where the tub used to be to support the weight. The floor is vinyl and this really dicked up the flow and look of the floor. I use a large plastic dog watering bowl where the bottom is the same circumference as the top. In other words it does not taper to the bottom (this is top heavy and would tip easier). The dog bowl is easier to tip then the rock bowls but the rock bowls have many crevices which all require cleaning. Clean-up after these guys is no joke so i try to skip the looks and go for simple. As for a soak, you can put your snake in the bathtub about once a week. I do this when I remember but often forget. Just keep in mind what temps are comfortable for a snake before dumping him into water which may be to hot or to cold.
