Fat florida king female

donv Sep 12, 2006 02:20 PM

Looks like an intergrade maybe? Voracious appetite. The first several seconds ater opening her container are always interesting. Always best to handle her BEFORE handling other snakes! Once past food mode she's a pleasure to handle.

It's hard to capture but she has a blueish tint to some of the lateral scales.

That could be the case. The guy I got it from purchased it as a goini as a hatchling. As it matured he didn't think it was so he sold it to me as a florida. I just liked the way it looked so I bought it. Thanks for looking, Don.

A BEAUTY you got there!!!
But, "SHE" looks to have an afwul thick, long, tail (and I don't mean due to obesity - even if it were, obesity has little effect on the tail itself)). Has someone probed "her" yet? Of course I could be wrong, but the tail does seem to taper a little slower than most female Kingsnakes. Of course I (NOW) have an exception to that myself. When I got my 5 foot female Eastern King last year, I was surprised to see such a long, fat tail on her. Even several folks on this site told me (after seeing her pic) that she's probably a male. So when I got home I probed her several times, because I was convinced it was a male for two reasons: Size (5 footer), AND a big long tail. Well, for the first time in my entire history of visually sexing ADULT kings (for over 20 years), I was wrong, and I was glad, cause this is the biggest female I've ever owned and she's still less than 10 years old (I think she either 6 or 8, I have to check my records). I will have to post pics of her soon (I'm currently overseas - sorry).
But anyway . . . I do want to comment on how nice looking "she" is. Very beautiful animal you got there. And it does look like a Eastern X Brooksi to me. Thanks for the pics (If you get tired of her just let me know, lol)

Well I bought it as a female. I haven't probed "her" but I personally think her tail looks "female". Maybe the pics are deceiving (or maybe I'm just wrong!). I did put a 1.5 year old axanthic male in with her earlier in the year just for kicks. The male was all over "her" but nothing ever came of it. She seemed to act very female like during these encounters. Hmmm...now you've got me wondering. Guess that means I'm gonna have one pissed off, violated king a little later on this evening. Anyway, thanks for your input, Don.

I've seen some old/big females with tails that looked a little like male tails. Still, when compared side by side with a male of the same size, there was no comparison. The base of the tail would be just as fat as a male's, but the tail would taper down a lot quicker than a male's, albeit not as quick as a regular sized female's.

Hey NICK! What's up bro?
I wish I had a pic of "Bonkers" She's the one with a thick swollen tail (for a female)! Everyone that has seen her has said "Are you sure its a female?" I doubted it myself, until I probed her. But to this day, she's the only adult eastern I've ever had with such a long, thick tail. So yes, there are exceptions! But probing is always a sure way of knowing - (And in the spring/summer time): so is copulation, lol!
