Finally got my cresties!!!! Some more questions ...

TasiaMay Aug 05, 2003 10:39 AM

I finally got my crested geckos on Sunday ... I'm so excited!! They are the dark/chocolate fire morph (I will post pics soon). They are pretty tiny so I am worried their cage is too big for them right now. The cage is a 70 gallon. They ate a bunch of crickets (about 7 each) last night, but I can't get them to touch the CGD or baby food. I guess what I am worried about is that the cage is too big and they can't find their food.

QUESTION 1 - Should I move them into two smaller cages until they are bigger?

QUESTION 2 - How can I get them converted over to CGD? They have taken a couple licks off my finger but they won't touch it when it is in the bowl. They won't touch the baby food either.

Thanks in advance to all!!!! )

Hi,
Congrats on the new geckos Yes i would say a 70gal is to large. When i first posted here about my baby i was told a critter keeper is best. I did that for a while but he, Zeek, started growing alot, so i have moved him to a 20gal tall. I still have to post pics and get opinions but so far he is doing great. At first i was giving crickets by bowl and he figured that out really quick. So to switch him to CGD i put in a small dish of it in the bowl and put a couple crickets in too. He instantly went for the crickets but stopped and went at the CGD like crazy, completely ignoring the crickets. He ate the crickets only after they walked over him lol. I then would put it in with one cricket and finally no crickets and now he's eating the CGD with no problems. I still think i'm offering to much though, cause usually only 1/4-1/2 of it is gone by morning.
I hope that helps, there are many people on here with alot more experience and i'm sure they will have great advice

First ... thanks for the reply!!!! What kind of bowl do you use to put your crickets in? Right now they are eating pretty tiny ones ... it's hard to pull off the legs to keep them from jumping out of the bowl without killing them. What do you use as a substrate - paper towl or nothing? When should I move them to a larger tank?

Thanks Again

I'm using reptile carpet carpet right now (thinking of changing that) and the bowl is one i got at a dollar store. Its really deep, all glass(see through) and i never had a cricket jump out. I have a vine hung around the cage that drops down almost into the bowl so Zeek can get in and out of it easily.

I've got apic of the tank and i'll post it soon.

I haven't given Zeek any crickets ina while cause i wanted to make sure his eating of the CGD wasn't a fluke of any kind. Now that i see he is taking it on a regular basis i'll offer him a few crickets once or twice a week again.

Definitely put them in smaller separate tanks.

Since your cresties are so small I wouldnt suggest to stop feeding crix and force them onto the CGD, and since you are moving to smaller cages It very well might be that they cant find the food and will eat it once their in a smaller tank.

So switch them to smaller tanks and keep offering crickets and the CGD.

Jack

P.S.
I love this pick =)

Thanks so much for the info ... I think I will go get two x-large kritter keepers to put them in until they are older. Do you put a water bowl in there or just mist heavily? By the way ... great crestie picture!!! He/She is not very shy of the camera, huh. Hope I can get some great ones like that of mine.

Thanks Again

Well I separated Moose and Kreecher and put them each in an extra large kritter keeper, but they still won't touch anything but crickets. They eat about four or five a night - which are dusted with calcium. Do I need to get something with Vitamin D3 as well? Is this enough ... I want to make sure they are getting enough to grow!!!

Thanks Again for all the Help!!!
