Switching from rats to rabbits

burmsrule114 Sep 12, 2006 09:18 PM

Hello. I have a 7ft. Green burmese python. What size/weight rabbits would be ok for him? Thank you.

Alot would be based off the girth and weight of your snake, but I personally would think that any 7'er should be able to take a 1 to 1 1/2 pound rabbit. Better to start small and increase once you know how it does. Todd

Is switching from rats to rabbits necessary? Will feeding a snake bigger prey generally affect its growth?

It is pretty much a necassity to switch to larger prey items when dealing with any of the giant snakes. It would be so impractical to attempt to feed a large python rats. Multiple prey items is not as nourishing as one larger prey item. Skin, bones, fur, etc... are all non nourishing items and when dealing with many smaller items the amount of non nourishing parts adds up to more then if you were feeding the appropriate size meal. And a direct affect of this is you will notice an increase in weight and size expecially initially when the switch is made. Hope this answers your questions. Todd

Thanks Todd! Your answer definitely makes sense. Now here's another question: Where the heck do I get f/t rabbits?

I don't know where you're located, BUT my local pet shop carries them. It might be worth your time to call the K-9 Country Club and pet store @ 218-233-8050 (Moorhead MN) and see who their supplier is, otherwise I'd say check with a local butcher --or farmer if you have the locality for it. But a butcher would be my best guess if you can't get your LPS to order them for you. And I'm betting that upstate MN is a bit of a trek from you...

Best of luck

Ignore message below--get 'em here! http://www.rodentpro.com/catalog.asp?prod=4&label=frozen_rabbits

Yea. I checked out the RodentPro website. I must say that it's very well put together and cheap! They're running a special on a lot of different rodents and I'm gonna come out with a sweet deal!

Rodent Pro deffinitely is a good source of rabbits. The only problem is shipping prices are killer. Since your rabbits are going to be at least 1/2 pounders and up, the package is going to heavy, combine that with the price of next day shipping it's pretty steep. It has to be next day shipping too. Until I can find a local source for rabbits, my 7 footer is going to have to deal with a few Jumbo rats....
