Hasn't "gone" in a month....

phiber_optikx Sep 13, 2006 01:06 AM

My wc black rat hasn't gone since 8-10.... I have had her for about 4-5 months now and she usually takes longer than my cbs. They usually go about 2-3 days after eating and she (the wc) usually goes about every 2 weeks. She missed a meal for the first time 2 weeks ago but ate a large mouse on Friday after much hesitation. She is 4'7" and is in a tub so doesn't get a whole lot of exercise. Should I be especially worried or could she possibly be gearing up for brumation?

If you think she has something in there to void, maybe try a soak in tepid water. On the humerous side, mine always like to go right after I clean the cages.

That's a good point. Environmental stimulation is the key for regular bowel movements. Adding a branch, changing out the substrate, placing the animal in a bigger or different cage, taking the animal outside for a few minutes, etc. Those are some ways to get her to poop.

When was the last shed? Some seem to take a long time to get through a cycle, refuse meals & don't poop until they do. I bet the snake sheds & poops soon. Duffy

She isn't blue. She shed about 2-3 weeks ago and isn't due for another 2-4 weeks. I would expect that she has internal parasites and they may be affecting her "cycles." I have been meaning to get a fecal done for her but as you can see I only have about a once a month window . I also suspect that she has been hit by a car or had a major fall in her lifetime. Her jaw is sometimes slightly slack, she has a "throaght" (lung flukes?) and has a lump in her stomach. So maybe she has a broken rib that affects her stools. When she goes they are HUGE, have an enormous amount of liquid (not urates just liquid) and smell about 20x more potent than my cb.

>>...taking the animal outside for a few minutes...

This worked well for my big male Creamsicle, and a big male Eastern King. Oh, and they didn't necessarily have to be outside! The Cream would go like clockwork after about 2 or 3 minutes outside, while the King would go after about 10 minutes on the floor. Strangely, my female Cream was more reluctant to do this.

I recommend the idea - it sure cuts down on having to clean cages! Also, going outside definitely beats following your snake around the house with paper towels!

The fecal is also an excellent idea. After treating my WC Black Rat, her stink factor went down noticeably.

Good Luck,

John D
