Name Question: Brooks and Brooksi?

twilightfade212 Sep 13, 2006 09:17 AM

Just got a pair of Brooks kingsnakes and pretty excited about them. They look great. Anyways, I see a lot more Brooksi in the classifieds and forums, and I was wondering if Brooksi and Brooks Kingsnakes are the same thing? Thanks a lot.

yesn they are...
brooksi comes from it´s cientific name (lampropeltis getulus brooksi) and brooks is the common name from "brook´s kingsnake"....
just the same as calling L.t.sinaloae "sinaloans" or "sinaloae".....

Brooksi is the old latin name assigned to the South Florida Kingsnake. Brooks King is the common name used in association with that subspecies. They both refer to the light phase animals with high crossband counts found in most of the counties south of Lake Okeechobee in FL (although isolated populations in several areas have a similar appearance) While these names are still very commonly used to describe animals with this appearance...it is no longer scientificlly recognized as valid. To science they are now known as Florida Kingsnakes(Lampropeltis getula floridana) and the animals that were referred to as Florida Kings (previously floridana) are now considered intergrades between True Florida Kings (flordana/formallybrooksi) and the Eastern Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula getula)
But to some of us they will always be Brooks Kings.

Hope that didn't confuse you any more than you were before...
