Snake hook recommendation?

senorsnake Sep 13, 2006 10:41 AM

What type of snake hook do you use for large boas? I've never used a snake hook for our collection before, the smaller snakes don't cause a handling problem, but i was thinking it would be helpful for getting out our big girls. I'm the snake person in the family and usually am the only one to care for them, and my husband is more of the business side of the operation, but i recently broke my collar bone and won't be able to care/handle for the larger boas for a number of months, and my husband isn't very comfortable with the boas and is reluctant to just grab them and pull them out like I usually do (he's been using a cane, lol). Any suggestions/links to places to buy appropriate hooks would be appreciated.

a good sized hook that would work well for a scaredy cat.
I'm not affiliated by the way, just seems like a good buisness.

I recently bought from tongs.com the "Standard Hook" in the 30 inch size. I got the shorter one because like you, I am female. I like it, it has a nice wide mouth for larger boas (about 4- 4.5" at the opening, I know it says 3" on the site but it is really larger). If you are a large woman maybe even the 40" hook would be good. Honestly with really large boas hooks don't work very well, because they are thck bodied snakes. I tried to pick up a fat 5 footer and it took two hands on the hook handle to lift her (for me anyway, maybe you are bigger stronger than me). I can move her around one handed though with the hook, so it helps with changing stuff in the cage. She's a wild caught right from the amazon jungle so there is no reaching in and grabbing her right now. : ) The rest are quite tame. I have had much bigger boas than this girl, and I really don't know how a hook will work for you if you have real large girls. Sorry to hear about breaking your collarbone, get well soon. The broken bone wont help you any using a hook either.

Good luck,
Caden

Do a search on eBay,theres a guy selling well built hooks made from golf clubs. He has been at it for some time now. He builds a very usable product at near half the cost of the fancy stuff.
I use them for the darker personalities we have here and they work just fine.No comments on the weaker link useing a cane ...LOL!!
