I was wondering what wood in the northern wisconsin area is safe for reptiles mainly geckos. I dont belivew it will be consumed so i was wondering if it was safe. We have many forms of pine and needle trees which I tghink are toxic. We also have oak, maple, birch, poplar, aspen, ash and willow. Whould any of these be safe for my geckos cage? Thanks

I would probably like you said stay away from pine (or other fir trees) as they have sap that is toxic and some types never really dry out. That wouldn't matter probably as your gecko won't eat or lick it. I would lean towards any of the hardwoods, trees that have leaves. I would also be sure it was well dried out ( as in kild dried) to be sure it doesn't have any parasites which could cause problems. This is why you usually see these types of things in pet stores.
You can check out the web for info on doing it yourself as I have seen info on using an oven to do it. It's been quite a while though so unless I do a search right now I couldn't tell you where.
Good luck!

I spent a while since my last reply doing a search to see if I could find some useful information for you about wood that might help.
A site about branches considered safe/unsafe for birds. For geckos? Sounds plausible when you read it.

A forum page discussion about what to do to sterilize wood for aquariums.

Another (rather lengthy page) about how to sterilize wood for aquariums.

I hope it helps.
