Need help, new to caring for turtles

MiniFoxx Sep 13, 2006 07:41 PM

Hi, my hubby and I took our children fishing this past weekend. They found a small box turtle and a small snapper. The box turtle isn't any bigger than a nickel and the snapper is 2" top to bottom and 1 1/2" side to side.

I don't know a thing about turtles. What do I feed them, what do I keep them in, what type of temp should I maintain for them, is it okay for them to be together in the same container, etc. I need to know the simplest of basics to keep these guys alive. I hate to see them die because I took them out of their natural environment. Also curious, is there a way to tell if they are female or male?

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

These are two separate exotic species with two very different needs to remain alive.

They should not be kept together.

Not having a vast knowledge of them; predisposes them to a lingering disease ridden death. It would be best for them if you could return them to where they were found.

There are many captive born turtles of many species that are available for pets.

Before aquiring one, consider researching all you can about the particular species you are wanting. Read all literature you can on them; and realize the long term commitment necessary for their survival.
