When I used to use sand way back I used to use a window screen for sifting. I used to lay it right across the tank, and SLOWLY poor it through the sreen. If it's to heavy to lift the bag just scoup it out of the bag with a pot and poor it over the screen.

Mine has a handle as well - but it's time to try to locate another. They seem harder to find, since plastic is everywhere.

I use the screen type strainer. It's a full sized one, not a hand held. Just set it in the bottom of the cage, pour the sand in it and pick it up and shake it slightly. Works great!!!!
I have several of them from my aquarium stuff (I'm a former (still kind of am) fish junky .

Hope that helps.
