Shedding Question... newbie

newsnakemom Aug 05, 2003 11:37 AM

I think our BP is shedding. His eyes are cloudy. I am wanting to know how long it usually takes for them to shed, should you soak them everyday when they are in shed to help? Do they usually get grumpy at shed time? He seems kinda grumpy right now. He just looked at me last night and hissed. OOOO.
Should I mist him with a spray bottle? How often?

Yeah...it's about to shed. I'm sure you have everything set up good, but soooo many new snake owners forget the importance of humidity, and this is the point in the cycle when it is most important. Even if all your temps and humidity are ok, here's what you do. Take the hide you have on the warm side, and line the inside with moist paper towels or something else that will absorb moisture. Put the snake in the hide and just leave it alone. Every day until it sheds, lift the hide and spray the paper towels to keep them moist. This will help your pet snake push through its old skin much easier and much less traumatically. Since your snakes eyes are blue today, I would say you are 3-5 days away from your first shed! You will notice it's eyes become very opaque, and then a day later they will clear up to almost normal. Once the eyes clear up, the snake normally completes its shed within 24-48 hours. Leave it alone and keep that humidity up!!

Good luck
Jeremy
