What can I do about flies around my Rodent breeders?

Kevin Ray Aug 05, 2003 11:39 AM

I have an insulated shed out back that is air conditioned and heated that I bred my rodents in. It is vented at the top to allow air movment. I was wondering if there is any tricks to keep flies away? They just hover around til I open up. They are now so bad that they get into the house too. I do keep it clean. Any Ideals????

I don't have any issues with flys in my rodent room because the two windows have screens. But I do have problems with them by the door to my room for some reason. I keep a can kill spray flies or whatever it's called. Works alright. Those little rolls you hang and they get stuck to don't work at all with many flies. Also a bug zapper won't work for you either. Depending on where you are in the world you might be able to grow a bunch of venus fly traps. They are inexpensive at garden stores and it would be an impressive way to solve the problem. But they do have extreme humidity requirements.

Feed stores or horse supply stores have a sticky tape that you thumbtack into the ceiling and hangs down. Works real good once a couple of flies get on it. Be carefull not to get stuck yourself...

Or put them where birds can fly into them, or where the cat might mistake it for a toy.....I love those fly tapes but they are a mixed blessing.

Mixed blessing was not the blessing I gave when it wrapped around my head and glasses.
