vermiculite

darknessheir Sep 14, 2006 12:41 AM

I have a question on where you guys get vermiculite/perlite, I live in a small town in northern wisconsin and cant seem to find it. Would Home depot or a similar store have it. Or should I go to a garden store and see if they can order some?

Can I use like gravel or fish rocks. I was told to get some to place under the peat moss to prevent mold. thanks

Yeah, you can get vermiculite at home depot or even walmart. They may call it a different name... when I was first looking for it I couldn't find it because alot of people have perlite... its the same thing just a differ4ent name... But you can use gravel if you want to use gravel... I don't think it would make much of a difference... I myself use perlite and I haven't had a problem with it

WalMart will have perlite in their gardening department. Vermiculite doesn't seem to be as available as it used to be. There was some concern about asbestos contamination of vermiculite, which was really unfounded, but I think it may have scared WalMart away from carrying it. Perlite and vermiculite are NOT the same thing, but both work in a similar way and would probably do the job equally well.
