Uro cage design.

trapdoor Sep 14, 2006 01:43 AM

Sorry if this is redundant with all the cage design and building questions but does anyone have a set (or know where some good good ideas might be found) of plans for building a furniture grade uromastyx cage?

I plan on getting an ornate uro and want to build a large cage with built-in cabinets below and if possible some sort of hood to hide light fixtures and my thermostat.

Having only built a couple of melamine racks in the past I don't have any cabinet or cage making experience to speak of.

Thank you in advance for any info!

Sounds like a good project. In this case I think you're best off getting a real cabinet making book and modifying it for your Uromastyx. Just go to a local bookstore and flip through a bunch of cabinet books. Find the one that seems to make the most sense to you.

I would probably build the cage and lower cabinets separately and attach them together somehow.

You'd think most people would have thought of that but I didn't so thanks!

I think I'll check into some cabinetry books tonight!

BTW, building racks is basically simple cabinet making, albeit without face frames. You probably have more than enough skill.

If you don't have the proper tools to make the cuts, have a cabinet shop do it for you. In that case you'll need to have a very well thought out plan.

Hi, I don't keep any Uro's so don't have species specific info but, have a fair amount of cage and cabinet experience

Go Modular if you can, that way you can add/expand/rearrange as future changes happen. You know the future will change One leads to two which leads to even more blah blah blah

Before you design/buy/build anything figure out your needs first! Including but not limited to:

Floor size (Uro's are ground dwellers so arboreal is not an issue....right?)

Heating, belly heat, RHP, basking spot etc.

Temp controls? Thermostat, what kind, where to put, where to place probe etc.

Lighting, will need UVB?

Cage access? How do you want to access cage, top lid means no stacking, front door means litter dam and maybe less viewing area, side door means larger viewing area but then you can't stack side by side cages etc. etc.

Since you're building it yourself, where will it go, that may limit your options and may also help decide sizing.

Here's an example of a modular stack, these are for Brazilian Rainbow Boas but you get the idea. Each level is a seperate cage. The center divider is removable if need be (is sealed with caulk so would be a little bit of work but do-able). These have a lot of cool features like fully formica'd interiors, external connecting tubes for breeding, keyed alike doors etc.

I and others here would be happy to help with design, just give us some specs!
