First Vet Visit and Sand

GizMoe1 Aug 05, 2003 11:42 AM

Well I took my new uro to the vet yesterday. The vet was very impressed with her good health. He took some xrays and the fecal came out clear. But, in the xray he pointed out that there was sand in her tummy. NOt enough to be harmful....yet.

When we got home I had planned on taking the sand out of her tank and placing her on paper towels, but I was exhausted. I fell asleep. When I woke up, I found my uro with her face burried in the sand. When I picked her up I noticed that sand was stuck in one of her nostrills. I tried to get it out, but with little success. Should I wait and see if it comes out on its own or what? She still has one clear nostrill so breathing should be okay.

Thanks,
Amber

Are you sure it is sand and not salt? I have never had sand stuck in my uro's nose, not to say that doesn't happen but maybe its salt? If its salt take a wet Q-tip and place it on the nostril it will dissolve rather quickly. If it is sand, i would just wait and let it pass it self. If it doesnt pass within 3-5 days then maybe go back to the vet.
Good luck

My mali's get sand in their nostrils every now and then. The first time I tried a million different things and could not get it out. I put him back in the tank and checked 5 minutes later and the sand was gone. Just give it time, they have ways of doing things on their own.

Thanks for the advice,

I waited a few hours and when I checked back I ntoiced that salt had formed around the nose and this was stopping the sand from dislodging. I used a wet q-tip and the salt as well as the sand came out so she is just fine now.

Thanks
Amber
